“The West Side Rooters Social Club, the Chicago Cubs original fan club, is a fraternity of Cubs fans who love the team as much as I do. Their loyalty towards the team is a great start to bringing a world championship to the north side.”

Ryne Sandberg, Hall of Fame Cub and West Side Rooters Social Club Secretary, 2008

Billy Goat, Black Cat and Murphy

Or even the black cat. Maybe our hundred-year suffering was at the hands of Chicago Cubs president Charles W. Murphy who pulled the plug on the West Side Rooters Social Club, an enthusiastic group of fans who cheered on a second consecutive world championship in 1908.

When the Rooters were disbanded after the 1908 season, so went any chance of another championship for the Cubs. This could be shrugged off as coincidence or it could have been the genesis of a drought that has plagued the once most feared franchise in the game.

Ernie Banks and the Rooters Committee are coming together with fans like you to revive the West Side Rooters! Will this be the extra push that brings a World Series to Wrigley Field in 2008 and beyond?

In the spirit of Joe Tinker and the fans of 1908, today’s Rooters will enjoy Cub-centric social events (a “tallyho”) and activities all on- and off-season long. Ernie and the Rooters Committee is busy building out this Web site to provide you with an online home to connect with fellow Rooter members, news, event information, and the lore of the 1908 Rooters.
